Any football fan will know that last year’s FIFA World Cup™ took place in South Africa, with Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium being purpose built for the event.

A project of this scale provided an ideal stage for Specialized Access Services (SAS) and Uniline Safety Systems to showcase their technical ability, versatility and the functionality of their fall arrest product range. Uniline Safety Systems provided fall protection system design advice and solutions to their Approved Installer Specialized Access Services (SAS).

The complex stadium design required special interface brackets to mount the fall protection system, which Uniline were able to design. This ensured that the final solution provided a high level of functionality and performance. The stadium’s iconic design takes its inspiration from the South African flag and its centre arch is not just for show – a cable car will take visitors to the viewing platform at the highest point, where they can get out and enjoy the amazing view. Once at the top, the visitors will be using Uniline’s fall arrest systems to make their viewing experience a safe and pleasurable one.

Uniline’s systems will also be used to provide continuous safe access for multiple maintenance personnel, when they need to undertake essential maintenance work on the compression and tension rings around the stadium. Uniline’s Uni-16™ system was ideally suited to the stadium design due to a number of factors, including:

• the distance between the stadiums supporting structures
• the number of users required to safely use the system
• its ability to navigate the various contours experienced on the arches
• its high level of functionality and proven performance

In addition to the Uni-16™ system, Specialized Access Services installed four EasyClimber® systems for safe vertical access on ladders. The EasyClimber® systems will allow the maintenance teams to access the compression and tension rings, as well as the roof structure for essential preventative maintenance of the roof membrane. If a worker were to slip or fall whilst climbing the ladders, the EasyClimber System will arrest the fall, preventing the worker from falling down.
Throughout the project the designer and client received a high level of technical support and service from Uniline and its Approved Installer, SAS.

The final score – reduced risk, reduced corporate liability and increased corporate social responsibility for the client.
