Lifeline for Chichester Cathedral

Securing a safe means of access and protecting individuals against the implications of a fall can be challenging in any work environment, but when that environment involves working several hundred feet above ground on a structure built 9 centuries ago – such challenges need special attention!!
In tasking Uniline Fall Protection Integration specialist – Vertical Technology Limited, those responsible for commissioning works at Chichester Cathedral knew only too well that variance in structure, edge proximity and exposure would require a multi faceted approach using proven engineered solutions.
A detailed assessment of the structure and associated risks, appraisal of fixings and careful calculation resulted in the selection of two unique fall protection products –
1. Unirail - a low profile extruded aluminium rail system that enables free movement whilst minimising load transference to the structure. The product was installed directly to the local chalk stone masonry.
2. Uni16 - a special load absorbing synthetic lifeline that can span up to 30m between structural fixings. This minimised roof penetrations and therefore the potential for leaks that might cause damage to the building.
Both products are being integrated into the building fabric in an effort to ensure the highest levels of worker protection, enabling free and unhindered movement whilst remaining low profile thereby preserving the all important aesthetics of such an important national treasure.
When works are complete, those utilising the fall protection systems will receive comprehensive theoretical and practical use training complimented by detailed user, inspection care and maintenance material.
And whilst it must always be accepted that fall arrest/ restraint equipment can never achieve the levels of protection afforded by fixed barriers such as guardrails – the combination of quality tested product, competent design and installation and detailed handover training does ensure that such risks are minimised.
